Rachel VanderKoogh, Board Cadet
I applied for the CCG Cadet Director Program because I am passionate about education, particularly for the young people of Gippsland. I was seeking an immersive learning experience to develop my knowledge of the school/board relationship and to enhance my leadership ability. The cadet program stood out because it provided a unique opportunity to fully engage in the role of a Board Director, which offered both a nurturing and comprehensive learning experience.
My experience in the program has been fascinating and incredibly inclusive. As cadets, Christina Campbell and I were treated as integral parts of the Board. We were encouraged to participate in all the functions of the Board and the broader leadership team. The training sessions were invaluable, allowing opportunities for us to ask questions, make connections between our experience and the session topics, and to give and receive feedback. Discussions before and after Board meetings deepened my understanding of CCG’s operations and the role of the Board.
The program has provided me with strong collegial connections and a sense of preparedness for the Boardroom. The support from my mentor, Iain Luck, the director of the cadet program, and my fellow cadet made me feel that I had a team guiding me every step of the way. This experience has given me the best possible preparation for future Board roles.
I would recommend this program. It offers a rare opportunity to be guided through the responsibilities of a Director in a supportive environment. CCG is a vital regional education provider, and being part of shaping its strategy and success has been invaluable. For anyone looking for leadership development with real, hands-on experience, this program is unmatched and should be embraced wholeheartedly.
