Mikkaela – Hairdressing

Mikkaela is a fully qualified hairdresser and she absolutely loves her job. But if it wasn’t for CCG, she might never have finished her apprenticeship.

‘When I was in Year 10, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do as a career,’ Mikkaela said. ‘I decided to do an introduction to hairdressing (Certificate II Salon Assistant) through the VET in Schools* program, studying one day a week at CCG. I discovered that I loved hairdressing.

‘After completing Year 11, I started an apprenticeship with a local hairdresser. I began my training at a Melbourne institution but then switched to CCG.

‘The hairdressing trainers at CCG are passionate about hairdressing and are very positive and supportive. They do their best to help all the apprentices become fully qualified.

‘I was awarded Apprentice of the Year and that achievement was due to the help I received from my trainers. In fact, I don’t think I would have even finished my apprenticeship if it hadn’t been for CCG.

After I became qualified, I continued working for my employer who has been really flexible all these years, first by supporting me throughout my apprenticeship and now by allowing me to work around raising a family.

I am still passionate about hairdressing. I love my workplace and the ability to work the hours that suit me, whether part-time or full-time. I am super happy and think I will be a hairdresser forever.

I’d like to say this to young people who are not sure what they want to do yet: the main thing you need to do is have a go. Try out different things until you find out what your passion is. Once you find it, go for it. If you put in the effort you’ll get whatever you want out of life.’
