Christina Campbell, Board Cadet
With decades of experience in health care and education, as well as a variety of life experiences and social roles within the community, I have transitioned into strategic positions that have allowed me to work in committees and present to boards.
Through this experience, I became eager to understand the thinking and operations of board directors. I wanted to strategically guide and govern the development of an organisation from a different experienced lens, distinct from my previous operational roles.
It was through a conversation with a social connection about my career aspiration that led to the role at CCG being shared with me via LinkedIn, which was perfectly timed for my situation. I researched the organisation and was really impressed with their vision and work, and I found that CCG’s values aligned with my own, so I decided to apply.
I truly believe that your experience is what you make it, so I threw myself into the opportunity as if I were already in the hot seat of a board director. I shared my thoughts and asked questions, and fully engaged in the process. It was daunting at first, but having an amazing board mentor proved immensely beneficial and supportive. I was also fortunate to be surrounded by many kind and supportive board directors and members of the operational management team who generously shared their thoughts, advice, and knowledge.
There were several cadet information sharing and development sessions that were very informative and greatly enhanced my understanding of both the role of a board director and the operations of CCG. These sessions created space to ask questions and gather information on the organisation from a board director’s perspective and set of expectations.
The experience is very much what you make of it. Whether it is through reading, asking questions or actively listening with a board director’s mindset, the more you put in, the more you get out.
If you are considering a future board director role, this is an outstanding opportunity. CCG is a safe, supportive and caring organisation with a board that genuinely values professional development and knowledge sharing.
This program has given me clear and transparent organisational processes, board director expectations and behaviours, and the overall role and function of a board. It also provided an in-depth understanding of CCG and the systems and processes that support the achievement of its strategic goals.
One of the most valuable aspects has been the opportunity to work alongside an amazing board of directors over the past year. I’ve learned so much from this diverse group; their unique perspectives, varied approaches to complex matters, and their strategic thinking have all contributed to my growth and understanding of effective governance.
If you’re considering joining a board, whether it’s CCG or another organisation, and you’re keen to grow in this space, this program is an excellent starting point. It offers invaluable insight into the responsibilities, expectations, and impact of a board director. If CCG’s vision and values resonate with you, you’ll find the experience even more rewarding. On top of that, the incredible education and supportive team at CCG make this journey both inspiring and empowering..
